By mixing with TOMLOX® , a much higher emissivity and lower furnace combustion temperature is achieved by reducing the amount of cold nitrogen supplied with combustion air, and replacing air with oxygen. This allows for a decrease in the total mass of oxygen supplied to the lower furnace.
This reduction in flue gas volume and dead load in the lower furnace, in spite of decreased oxygen stoichiometry and unchanged combustion temperature, accelerates the rate of combustion significantly.
The 'carry over' is also reduced due to lower upward gas velocities and more black liquor can be processed.
This new low capital technology has been implemented and tested for one year at the Stora Enso Norrsundet mill in Sweden and has proven the following benefits:
- Increased liquor burning capacity in a very safe way
- Increased production of high margin incremental pulp (if the boiler is the bottleneck)
- Extended lifetime of existing recovery boilers (delays investment in new recovery boilers)
- Extended runtime between waterwash in spite of higher capacity
- Short delivery time, 4 months from decision to start up
- Use it when needed
- Higher reactivity and controllability, improved air emissions
- Higher thermal efficiency due to lower flue gas flow and excess air level
- Higher heat transfer in the furnace and lower exit gas temperature due to higher emissivity.
